Hyper-policing is especially prominent on NYCHA campuses. In fact, every campus is tied in with a precinct specifically created and maintained to assign more officers to patrol NYCHA campuses. This increases the chances for negative interactions with police officers, which is doubly bad for public housing residents who are subject to NYCHA’s permanent exclusion policy. This policy gives NYCHA the right to evict someone or a family from public housing for life if they are deemed to be a “dangerous person.” In no uncertain terms, this policy ties their right to housing to police interactions.
The permanent exclusion policy must be abolished.
